In this "me-centered" culture, it is more important than ever to empty ourselves to serve the OTHER. I believe that many of us feel busy, tired, anxious, and isolated. Often, we seek peace and rest in the form of "self-care." There is a good and healthy desire to rest and re-energize, but I can't help but feel that part of being overwhelmed in my own life is due to my lack of direction and purpose. I exhaust myself for various reasons and with good intentions. As I have prayed with this, I have found God calling me more and more to surrender my busyness, aspirations, and desires to Him. The greatest call is to be a Saint—a call which we all have in common. Through Christ and the saints, we see holiness lived out as a total self-gift for OTHERS. In this complete surrender to the will of the Father and the promptings of the Holy Spirit, we become witnesses to the love of God. My goal in life, then, is sainthood. To be worthy of heaven and to die to myself every day so that I may bring as many others with me as I can.
This journal is about cultivating a heart of love, service, and sacrifice, following the example of Christ and the saints. At every stage of life, young or old, we are called to see our family, friends, and neighbors as Christ does. We must humble ourselves and root out all impediments that blind us to see where we are called to serve. Through this intentional self-gift, we are emptied so that all that remains is Jesus. This brings about true joy and peace, both in our lives and in the lives of those around us.
